As U.S. energy demand continues to grow, we need more energy, and we need it fast. Luckily, clean power projects are ready to meet this growing need, on the timescales that new technologies need. 91AVÔ´´ Research team’s newest Speed to Market analysis shows how clean power projects are faster to both build and connect to the grid, enabling future load growth without relying on costlier thermal units or putting upward pressure on system-wide prices.

The difference is clear:

  • Faster to build: Clean power projects spent an average of less than a year in development last year, while gas turbines spent two to three years in advanced development and construction.
  • Faster to connect: Due to its robust project pipeline, clean power projects take six months to two years to connect to the grid, whereas unplanned gas generators can take an average of five to seven years.

Clean energy is keeping our country’s grid stronger and less reliant on slower, costlier sources of energy. To quickly and affordably meet future energy needs, we need to leverage the speed and low cost of clean energy projects.

July 2026: Clean Power Delivers During Heatwaves /resources/clean-power-heatwaves-july-2026/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=clean-power-heatwaves-july-2026 Wed, 22 Jul 2026 09:00:35 +0000 /?post_type=resource&p=75678 Clean energy saved the grid more than $170 million during the July 2026 heatwave.

America celebrated its 250th birthday amid one of the year’s most significant heatwaves. As extreme temperatures drove electricity demand to seasonal highs, wholesale power prices surged, and regional power systems relied heavily on expensive gas and coal peaking plants to maintain reliability. The grid was pushed to its limits in some areas, and nearly 400,000 households across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast experienced power outages during some of the hottest hours of the year.

Across the areas most affected by the heatwave, wind and solar generation increased during the highest-demand hours compared to the days before and after the event, providing electricity when it was needed most. Markets with higher levels of clean energy experienced substantially lower wholesale electricity prices, while regions with relatively little clean generation experienced the highest prices despite having tens of gigawatts of clean energy waiting to connect to the grid.

To quantify the value of additional clean energy, 91AVÔ´´ modeled a scenario in which advanced utility-scale solar, wind, offshore wind, and battery storage projects — totaling 74 GW — currently awaiting interconnection in MISO, PJM, NYISO, and ISO New England had already been operating.

The results were clear:

  • More than $170 million in wholesale electricity cost savings during the July heatwave, thanks to clean power.
  • Lower reliance on expensive gas, coal, and oil peaking generation.
  • Improved system reliability, including avoiding modeled reliability shortfalls during the highest-demand hours.
  • Lower wholesale electricity prices across every modeled region.

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, and electricity demand continues to rise. This analysis demonstrates that expanding clean power is not simply an emissions strategy — it is a reliability and affordability strategy. Bringing shovel-ready clean energy projects online faster would reduce consumer costs, strengthen grid reliability, and lessen dependence on the most expensive generating resources when Americans need electricity the most.

The U.S. experienced peak heatwaves from July 28–30, 2025, with extreme temperatures concentrated across the Central and Eastern regions and little overnight relief. The event tied or broke temperature records and drove electricity prices in regions with less renewable generation well above typical July levels. As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, they place increasing pressure on electricity demand for cooling.

This tightens available supply, requires higher-cost generation to meet demand, and heightens risks to grid reliability. The heatwave clearly demonstrated which systems perform best under pressure—those with a diverse mix of power plants.

Key Takeaways:

  • Overall, clean energy saved the grid more than $114 million during the 3-day heatwave. Wholesale electricity markets with significant wind, solar, and energy storage representation saw lower electricity prices than those without.
  • Regions with high clean power penetration kept electricity prices low during the heatwave. When the heatwave hit, more expensive thermal units and imported electricity were required.
  • If clean power hadn’t been online, all of ERCOT’s thermal capability would have been needed and may not have been enough to meet electricity demand.
